Taking Care of Your Land

Below are five stewardship tips for maintaining your property in a way that is ecologically sound and sustainable:

  1. Introduce into your landscape native plant species that already have adapted to the region's climate and require little attention once established.

  2. Keep your grass at least three inches tall to protect it from disease and reduce its water requirements. Consider converting part of the landscape to a native meadow to be mowed no more than twice a year.

  3. Remove invasive plants from edges where forests meet open ground.

  4. Leave all dead and downed wood in your forested areas. It will provide shelter for small animals and amphibians and food for decomposers.

  5. Assess the condition of your trees. Especially near well-used areas, such as driveways and walkways, identify those that would not withstand summer storms, and take precautions.
